About this event
Coming in at #35 on the Top 100 is Annie Hall (1977), starring Woody Allen as neurotic comedian Alvy Singer and Diane Keaton as the endlessly charming, scene-stealing Annie Hall.
We'll watch Alvy Singer pick apart his romance with Annie from every angle -- flashbacks, fantasy sequences, subtitles that say what characters are really thinking, even a cartoon detour -- all in his ongoing quest to understand why relationships never seem to work out.
It swept Best Picture, Director, Actress, and Screenplay at the Oscars, but underneath all the innovative structure, it's just two people trying (and mostly failing) to be good at love at the same time.
Annie's menswear-inspired wardrobe launched a thousand thrift-store trends, and the whole film doubles as a time capsule of 1970s Manhattan, cocaine jokes and all.
Spend some time with Alvy and Annie before we meet, and let's dig into why a film so specific to one neurotic New Yorker's love life still feels so universal.
