Austin Staples: Sunset Bat Cruise

This is stop 8 of the Austin Staples series where we visit things that make Austin what it is. These events will focus on visiting places that have been established for a long time and help keep Austin weird.

Austin has the largest urban colony of bats in North America with an estimated 1.5 million bats inhabiting under the Congress Street bridge. Perhaps you’ve seen them while on a sunset stroll around Town Lake (fun fact, I almost ran into a bunch of them once while I was exercising on the trail). While one can go and observe on their own, I thought we could make a whole experience out of this and do a bat boat cruise.

We will be touring with Lone Star Riverboat, which has daily (weather permitting) boat tours. Our boat will be departing at 7:30, but you have to arrive early to board the vessel. Boarding starts at 6:45 and ends at 7:15. IMPORTANT: if you arrive at 7:30, you may not be able to get on the boat. We’ll meet up at 6:30 and then get in line to board at 6:45. I’ll try to save seats, but I cannot guarantee you’ll get a seat with the group if you come later. This boat will sell out, so get your tickets sooner rather than later. The tour will last around an hour, and afterward we can go out for food/beverages for those who want to hang around longer. Food and drinks are also allowed on the boats. Let’s hope we get to see a phenomenon of nature and lots of bats come out!
