About this event
The Jewish Studies Course 175CNS "Holocaust Memory through the Ages: Memoirs, Memorials, Movies" screens the film "The Zone of Interest."
The Zone of Interest (2023) Directed by Jonathan Glazer | Germany/United Kingdom/Poland | 105 min
Loosely based on Martin Amis's novel, The Zone of Interest offers a chilling and unconventional portrayal of the Holocaust by focusing not on the victims, but on the family of Rudolf Höss, the commandant of Auschwitz. Rudolf, his wife Hedwig, and their children live an idyllic life in a comfortable home directly beside the camp, tending a garden, raising a family, and enjoying the routines of domestic life while mass murder unfolds just beyond their garden wall.
Rather than depicting violence directly, the film relies on sound and atmosphere to reveal the horrors occurring nearby. The constant presence of gunfire, screams, trains, and smoke underscores the family's startling indifference to the suffering around them, offering a powerful meditation on complicity, moral blindness, and what philosopher Hannah Arendt famously termed the "banality of evil."
Winner of the 2024 Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film and Best Sound, The Zone of Interest challenges viewers to consider how ordinary people can become accustomed to extraordinary cruelty. Its innovative approach to Holocaust representation makes it a significant contribution to contemporary discussions of memory, witnessing, and the legacy of genocide.
