About this event
This program traces a narrative arc from the nation's founding ideals to contemporary perspectives on identity, migration, equity, and shared civic space. Through music, this performance explores belonging not as a fixed condition, but as a process shaped by history, struggle, and collective imagination. As a uniquely American ensemble rooted in civic and educational traditions, the wind symphony offers a powerful medium through which to examine the evolving meaning of belonging in the United States and within the Duke community.
For this special evening, the Duke University Wind Symphony welcomes an extraordinary group of guests: Viet Cuong, Brittany J. Green, Michele Fernandez, and Jim Obergefell. Learn more about these guests using the link on the side of this page.
This performance is part of "We the People," a Duke and Durham collaboration that marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence through a series of public events examining the nation's evolving identity. Drawing its title from the opening words of the Constitution, the project invites us to consider who "the people" have been and who we aspire to be within the ongoing story of the United States.
This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome.
