About this event

What does it mean to report on a movement that transforms your country-and puts your own safety at risk? Join journalists Nilo Tabrizy and Fatemeh Jamalpour for a conversation about For the Sun After Long Nights, their deeply personal and rigorously reported account of Iran's Woman, Life, Freedom uprising.

Following the September 2022 death of Mahsa Jîna Amini in police custody, thousands of Iranians took to the streets in one of the country's largest uprisings in decades. Jamalpour documented the movement from inside Iran, facing the threat of arrest and imprisonment, while Tabrizy reported from abroad, knowing her coverage could prevent her from safely returning. Communicating across borders and through encrypted platforms, the two journalists forged a bond that became the foundation for their book.

Moderated by journalist, documentary filmmaker, and Duke professor Victoria Bouloubasis, this conversation will explore the women at the forefront of the protests, the challenges of documenting state violence, and the personal stakes of covering stories closest to one's heart. Together, the speakers will consider the movement's legacy and journalism's role in preserving the voices and experiences of those who risk everything to demand change.

Fatemeh Jamalpour will be joining this event virtually.
