About this event
"From Bronze to Gold: Experiencing Sienese Art" Stephanie Wisowaty, Anne L. Poulet Curatorial Fellow, The Frick Collection
Exhibition Talks bring specific works, themes, or questions into focus to enrich visitors’ experience of the Frick’s special exhibitions. Offered in connection with Siena: The Art of Bronze, 1450-1500: https://www.frick.org/exhibitions/siena, this brief talk considers how Sienese artists used different materials to create distinctive visual and devotional experiences. Beginning with Vecchietta’s Resurrection, the talk explores the sculptural possibilities of bronze before turning to two Sienese gold-ground paintings in the Frick’s permanent collection: Duccio’s Temptation of Christ on the Mountain and Christ Bearing the Cross, with a Dominican Friar attributed to the circle of Simone Martini. By moving between bronze sculpture and gold-ground painting, the talk considers how material, surface, light, and scale shape the ways we encounter sacred images.
Please meet in the Ian Wardropper Education Room: https://www.frick.org/map. Assistive listening devices will be available upon request.
Repeat sessions of this program will be offered on November 5: https://www.frick.org/programs/galleries?trumbaEmbed=view%3Devent%26eventid%3D208965724, December 14: https://www.frick.org/programs/galleries?trumbaEmbed=view%3Devent%26eventid%3D208965725, and January 14: https://www.frick.org/programs/galleries?trumbaEmbed=view%3Devent%26eventid%3D208965726 at 1:00 PM.
