About this event

Authors & Their Journeys: An award-winning Pakistani-American poet and essayist, Shadab Zeest Hashmi is known for her work bridging Eastern and Western literary traditions. She is highly regarded for her mastery of traditional poetic forms like the ghazal and qasida within contemporary English literature. Baker of Tarifa explores the legendary era of la convivencia in Al-Andalus (Muslim Spain), a time when Muslims, Jews and Christians lived together in peace and fostered a rich, vibrant cultural exchange. The collection uses both historical figures and imaginative storytelling to recreate medieval Andalusian culture. Through her poems, Hashmi delves into themes of daily life, cultural exchange, and the tragic loss that came with war and exile at the end of the Moorish period.
