Inspired by The Thousand and One Nights, Raoul Walsh’s The Thief of Bagdad is a spectacular accomplishment of production design and special effects. This fantasy epic continues to amaze audiences and inspire filmmakers a century after it was made.
Douglas Fairbanks stars as a carefree pickpocket who falls in love with a princess (Julanne Johnston). He can only win her hand by retrieving the rarest treasures on earth, a quest that grows more fantastic with each passing thrill. An indefatigable Fairbanks battles a fire-breathing dragon in caverns of flame, fights a giant underwater spider, and soars into the clouds on a magic carpet.
Presented in a 4K restoration produced by Patrick Stanbury of Photoplay Productions. Pianist and local favorite Andrew Simpson provides live accompaniment. Description adapted from Kino Lorber.
Director: Raoul Walsh. Country: United States. Released: 1924. Length: 154 min. Format: Restored DCP. Silent with English intertitles.
